7 Monthly Renaissance May 2022 Qur’anic Exegesis S ū rah al-N ū r (3) Amin Ahsan Islahi Section II: Verses (11-26) In these verses, while referring to the mischief worked by the hypocrites in the incident of ifk , certain weaknesses which manifested themselves in a group of Muslims are pointed out. They inadvertently had become a part of the mischief and rather rashly started to spread the propaganda the hypocrites wanted to spread. This was in spite of the fact that the Muslims were to base their mutual dealing on trust and give others the benefit of the doubt. If a Muslim hears something evil regarding a fellow Muslim, he must not accept it nor spread it unless the matter has been fully investigated. In this regard, the desire and effort of the hypocrites and their patrons are exposed. Muslims were to guard against them because the hypocrites were trying to malign their moral repute by spreading all kinds of rumours. They were not to allow them to achieve that objective. To achieve this end, important directives were also given in this regard. They were also told to forgive those who had inadvertently become a part of the mischief. Readers may now proceed to study these verses in the light of this background. Text and Translation ن ۡ ﻟﺬﻳۡﻦﺟﺂءوۡ ﺑﺎﻵۡﻹﻓۡﻚﻋﺼۡﺒﺔٌ ﻣﻨۡﻜﻢ ً ﻵﻹ ﺗﺤۡﺴﺒﻮۡه #" ۡ ﻟﻜﻢ ٌ ﺑﻞۡ ﻫﻮ ﺧ*ۡ) ۡ ﻟﻜﻢ ﻟ.ﻞ ﻣۡﺮي ً/ ۡ ﻣﻨۡﻬﻢ ۡﺘﺴﺐﻣﻦ ﻵۡﻹﺛۡﻢ 6 ﻣﺎ 7 8 ۡ)ه 9 ٰ;ﻛ = و ﻟﺬيۡ ﺗﻮ ۡ ﻣﻨۡﻬﻢ 8 ﻟﻪ ٌ ﻋﺬ ب ﻋﻈﻴۡﻢٌ ﴿ ١١ ﴾ﻟﻮۡ ﻵﻹۤ ذۡ ﺳﻤﻌۡﺘﻤﻮۡه ًﻇﻦ ۡﻔﺴﻬﻢۡ ﺧ*ۡ) L ﻟۡﻤﺆۡﻣﻨﻮۡن و ﻟۡﻤﺆۡﻣﻨٰﺖ ﺑﺎ O و ﻗﺎﻟﻮۡ ﻫٰﺬۤ ٌ ﻓۡﻚ ﴿ ٌQۡ* ﻣﺒ ١٢ ﴾ﻟﻮۡ ﻵﻹ ﺟﺂءوۡ ﻋﻠﻴۡﻪ ﻌﺔ Tۡ ﺑﺎر ﺷﻬﺪآء 7 ﻓﺎذۡ ﻟﻢۡ ﻳﺎۡﺗﻮۡ ﺑﺎﻟﺸﻬﺪآء ﻚﻋﻨۡﺪ Z [ ﻓﺎوﻟ ﷲ]ٰ\ ﻫﻢ ﻟۡﻜٰﺬﺑ ﻮۡن﴿ ١٣ ﴾وﻟﻮۡ ﻵﻹﻓﻀۡﻞ ﷲ]ٰ\ﻋﻠﻴۡﻜﻢۡ و "ة bٰ ; ﻟﺪﻧۡﻴﺎو ﻵۡﻹ d 8 رﺣۡﻤﺘﻪ ۡ ;ۡ ﻣﺎۤ ﻓﻀۡﺘﻢ d ۡ ﻟﻤﺴﻜﻢ ﻓﻴۡﻪ ٌ ﻋﺬ بٌ ﻋﻈﻴۡﻢ fg ﴿١٤ 8 ﴾ ذۡ ﺗﻠﻘﻮۡﻧﻪ ﺑﺎﻟۡﺴﻨﺘﻜﻢۡ و
