Ḥ ad ī th 48 Monthly Renaissance October 2021 Mu ḥ ammad ‘Al ī ibn Ab ī Ṭā lib Ma‘mar ibn al-K ḥ a ṭṭā b Mu ḥ ammad ibn Ism ā ‘ ī l ‘Uthm ā n ibn al-K ḥ a ṭṭā b Ḥ usayn ibn Ja‘far Ab ū Bakr A ḥ mad ibn Mu ḥ ammad Ab ū ‘Al ī Ab ū al-Fa ḍ l Ab ū Gh ā lib Ab ū ‘Abdull ā h ‘Al ī ibn al-Khi ḍ r Ab ū al-Wa ḥ sh Ibn ‘As ā kir As mentioned by Ibn ‘As ā kir, the person who actually narrates from ‘Al ī (rta) is ‘Uthm ā n ibn al-Kha ṭṭā b (d. 327 AH) and not Ma‘mar ibn al-Kha ṭṭā b: ( ﻛﺬ ﺳﻤﻰ ﻵﻻﺷﺞأﺑﺎ ﻟﺪﻧﻴﺎو ﻟﻤﺤﻔﻮظأن ﺳﻤﻪ +– ﻗﺎل ﺑﻦﻋﺴﺎ ﻋﺜﻤﺎنﺑﻦ ﻟﺨﻄﺎب ) . About him, Ibn al-Jawz ī records that Ab ū Bakr al- Kha ṭī b says that his words lack veracity and his narratives should not be adduced from. 8 Al-Dhahab ī says that he has narrated from ‘Al ī (rta) and there is a gap of three hundred years between the two; scholars regard him to be a liar. 9 Ibn Kath ī r states that it is said that he has narrated a written collection from ‘Al ī (rta); however, most scholars of the past and present regard this written collection to be a fabrication. These scholars include Ab ū Ṭā hir al-Salaf ī , Ibn Taymiyah, al-Mizz ī and al-Dhahab ī . 10 III Conclusion It can be concluded on the basis of the above information that the ascription of this narrative to the Prophet (sws) cannot be reliably established. ـــــــــــــــــــــــــ 8.
