22 Monthly Renaissance July 2021 Ḥ ad ī th Tij ā rah Narratives from S ū rah Jumu‘ah Dr Shehzad Saleem Introduction Some narratives 1 describe that once while the Prophet (sws) was delivering the Friday sermon or leading the Friday prayer, a caravan from Syria carrying merchandise arrived right at that time. Almost all narratives say that all except twelve companions who were in the mosque deserted it and flocked to buy goods. At this, they were rebuked by a Qur’ ā nic verse that was revealed on that occasion. A variant specifies that Ab ū Bakr (rta) and ‘Umar (rta) were among these twelve. 2 A weak variant from ‘Al ī ibn ‘ Āṣ im reports that forty people were left in the mosque. 3 A representative text of the narrative reads: ﺣ ﺛ ﺪ § ﻣﺤﻤﺪٌ ﻗ F ﺎل ﺣ ﺛ ﺪ § ﻣ F ﺑْ ﺪ ﻤ ﺤ ﻦ ﻓﻀﻴْﻞٍ ﻋ ْ ﻦ ﺣﺼ)ْ(ٍ ﻋ ْ ﺳﺎﻟﻢ ﺑْ ﻦ ﻦ ¨ ﻟْﺠﻌْﺪ 5 ﺟﺎﺑﺮٍ ر ﻦْ ﻋ © F ٰ S ﷲ ﻋ R ْ ﻨ ﻗ ﻪ ﺎل ﻣ 5k ﻗْﺒﻠﺖْ ﻋ)]ٌ وﻧﺤْﻦ ﻧﺼ ﻊ ﻟﻨ F ﺻ k5 ٰ S ﷲ R ﻋ ْ ﻠ ﻴ ﻪ و ﺳ ﻢ ﻠ ْﻔﺾ ﻟﻨ ¤ ﻟْﺠﻤﻌﺔﻓﺎ ﻵ ﺎس رﺟﻶًﻹ C« ْ ﻋ F§ْ ﻹ ﺛ ﻟﺖْ ﻫ ¬ž ﻓ ﺬ ه ﻵْﻼﻳﺔ و ر ذ وْ ﺗﺠﺎرةً وْ ْﻔﻀﻮ ¤ ً ﻟﻬْﻮ ﻤًﺎ ¥ ﻮكﻗﺎ ﻟﻴْﻬﺎوﺗﺮ J ā bir ibn ‘Abdull ā h said: “A caravan arrived [in Mad ī nah] while we were offering the Friday prayer behind the Prophet (sws).
