6 Monthly Renaissance April 2020 Qur’ ā nic Exegesis S ū rah Y ā s ī n Javed A ḥ mad Gh ā mid ī ٰ ﻟﺮﺣۡﻤٰﻦ ﻟﺮﺣﻴۡﻢ ﺑﺴۡﻢ ﷲ ﺲٓ ۚ﴿ ﻳٰ ١﴾ و ﻟۡ ٰۡن ﻟۡﺤﻜﻴۡﻢ ﴿ۙ٢ ﴿ۙ $ۡ% ﴾ ﻧﻚ ﻟﻤﻦ ﻟۡﻤﺮۡﺳﻠ ٣﴾ ﴿+ طٍ ﻣﺴۡﺘﻘﻴۡﻢٍ 123ٰ4 ﻋ ٤﴾ ﻳۡﻞ 8ۡ9 ﺗ ﻟۡ ﻌﺰﻳۡﺰ ﻟﺮﺣﻴۡﻢ ۙ﴿ ٥﴾ ﻟﺘﻨۡﺬر ﻗﻮۡﻣًﺎﻣﺎۤ ﻧۡﺬر ٰﺑﺂؤﻫﻢۡ ﻓﻬﻢۡ ﻏٰﻔﻠﻮۡن﴿ ٦﴾ 3 N 4 ﻟﻘﺪۡ ﺣﻖ ﻟۡﻘﻮۡلﻋ In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful. This is S ū rah Y ā s ī n. 1 This Qur’ ā n replete with wisdom bears witness that you surely are among the messengers, 2 upon a very straight path. 3 It has been revealed with great diligence and planning from the Being Who is powerful, ever-merciful. 4 It is 1. What is the meaning of this name? I have explained in detail my view about it while discussing verse 2 of S ū rah al-Baqarah. 2. This is because only God’s messenger can present such wise and miraculous words in which one can see God speaking; it should be a discourse that explains everything that is necessary for mankind and which was never explained by any human being; it should guide them in affairs in which there is no other means of guidance; a discourse to which our intuition bears witness, which is corroborated by established facts derived from knowledge and reason, which enlivens dead hearts the way rain enlivens desolate terrains, which has the same majesty and grandeur felt in each and every word by every person who knows the language of the Qur’ ā n. 3. The actual words are: 4 ﻋ 3 ٍ طٍ ﻣﺴْﺘﻘﻴْﻢ 12 . This is the second enunciative ( khabar ) after the first that has come without a particle of co-ordination. The reason is that the testimony of the Qur’ ā n presented here relates simultaneously to two premises: one, he is God’s messenger and two, he is on the straight path. The translation keeps this aspect into consideration. 4. The word ﻳۡﻞ 8ۡ9 ﺗ is in the accusative because of a suppressed verb and two attributes are mentioned of the being to whom it is ascribed: ﻟۡﻌﺰﻳۡﺰ (powerful) and ﻟﺮﺣﻴۡﻢ (merciful).
