Am ī n Ahsan Isl ā h ī Isl ā h ī was born in 1904 at Bamh ū r , a small village in Azamgarh (U. P.), Ind ia. He graduated from the Madrasah al-Isl ā h around 1922. The teacher who influenced him the most during his student life at the Madrasah was ‘Abd al-Rahm ā n Nigr ā m ī (d. 1928?), himself a versatile genius. Nigr ā m ī ’s attention helped him in developing an intense inclination towards Arabic literature. After graduating from the Madrasah, he entered the field of journalism. For a while, he edited a newspaper Mad ī nah at Bijnawr and also remained associated with Sach , a newspaper edited by the luminary ‘Abd al-M ā jid Dary ā b ā d ī (d. 1977) . From 1925-1930, he followed al-Far ā h ī like a shadow. It was in this formative period of his life that he developed a deep understanding of the Qur’ ā n and learnt from al-Far ā h ī the principles of direct deliberation on the Book of Allah. After al-Far ā h ī ’s death, Isl ā h ī studied Had ī th from a celebrated scholar of this discipline, ‘Abd al-Rahm ā n Muhaddith Mub ā rakpur ī (d. 1935). In 1936, he founded the D ā ’irah-i Hamidiyyah, a small institute, to disseminate the Qur’ ā nic thought of al-Far ā h ī .
