Playing God: Misreading a Divine Practice 52 Disbeliever.” 34 It is evident from another narrative attributed to ‘Al ī (rta) that here the word “Disbeliever” signifies an Idolater: >† fB e+ /? W10! No Musli m will b e killed in qis ā s of an Idolater. 35 It essential to relate this Had ī th to its basis in the Qur’ ā n since a Had ī th can no t give an independent directive. Thus in accordance w ith the divine practice mentioned in the Qur’ ā n as discussed in this treatise, after Muhammad’s migration to Mad ī nah, the Idolaters had lost their right to live after having intentionally denied the truth. As a result, this Had ī th and other Ah ā d ī th of similar meaning are solely related to the Idolaters of the Prophet’s times. 36 This directive has no bearing on the non- Muslims of today. Consequently, today if a Muslim is guilty of murdering a non-Muslim, he shall certainly be sent to the gallows if he is not forgiven by the family of the slain. vi.
