Overcoming Greed - Dr Shehzad Saleem

Overcoming Greed

One of the shortcomings that mars a human being is greed. It makes a person blind to the needs of others. Such a person tends to forget his moral and social responsibilities and becomes heedless to the call of his conscience. Greed and avarice sometimes turn human beings into ruthless animals. Here are some tips that may help us in overcoming this instinct:

Firstly, we must try to concentrate on the higher goals and constructive activities of life. A person who has such goals and activities will always want to spend money to achieve them.

Secondly, we need to experience the spiritual contentment that accompanies spending wealth on others. Greed and selfishness make a person anxious and worrisome and the mind is in a perpetual state of turmoil to amass more and more. With spending on others comes an unmatched feeling of satisfaction.

Thirdly, we must realize that wealth is not going to accompany us in the afterlife. How this wealth is used in this life can only be of benefit to us in the everlasting life of the Hereafter. Smart people are far-sighted. They always plan for a better future.

Fourthly, we must also realize that wealth is a trust from God. People who are rich and wealthy owe more to the society. They must also remember that just as God has blessed them with wealth, He can take it away from them in the blink of an eye. So many examples of this abound.
